WASHINGTON (August 26, 2015)  - On August 29, one of the world's leading green technology containerships will launch in San Diego Bay, marking a pivitol chapter in the story of the domestic shipbuilding and repair industry. Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) member General Dynamics NASSCO will launch TOTE 2, the second ship in the world's first series of containerships powered by liquified natural gas (LNG).

Alcinda Buirds, a 32-year NASSCO employee, will pull the trigger to release the ship into San Diego Bay. Mrs. Buirds is one of the 3,400 people at NASSCO who helped build the LNG-powered vessels and one of the over 400,000 men and women across the country who sustain the U.S. shipbuilding, ship repair and maritime industry. In fact, as the industry continues to sustain the industrial base needed to maintain the U.S. Merchang Marine, for every one job created directly by the maritime industry, supporting industries generate five more jobs

"The launch of TOTE 2 is another demonstration of how the U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry is not only at the forefront of the latest shipbuilding technology, but also leading the world in the utilization of green technology to power and operate vessels that are essential to the safe and reliable movement of people and goods," said Matthew Paxton, president of the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA)

The new LNG-powered ships measure more than two football fields in length and will carry cargo exports between U.S. Jones Act ports. Because LNG powers them, the ships will reduce particulate matter by 98 percent as well as carbon dioxide emissions by 72 percent, the equivalent of removing more than 15,700 cars from the road. TOTE 2 will also include a ballast-water treatment system, making it one of the cleanest and greenest cargo-carrying containerships in the world.

The new LNG vessel will be homeported in Jacksonville, Florida and will serve San Juan, Puerto Rico.
